Recruiting agencies are a common avenue for finding new career opportunities for technical writers. You could just send your resume to a recruiter, let it simmer, and hope for some positive results. Or, you can attend the March OCSTC meeting and learn about how the recruiting process works, what makes a resume hit a home run and what can cause you to strike-out.
Audrey Murrell from TEKsystems will provide real-world insights on how to get hiring managers to read past the first few sentences of your resume, what to do if there is a mismatch between the tools you know and the tools specified in the position description, how to avoid pricing yourself out of the competition, and getting past roadblocks such as too much experience.
Once you get the position or contract, what are the mechanics to getting your paycheck? What is the difference between getting paid on a W-2 or 1099? How often does contract work turn into full-time employment? Should you register as an S-Corporation, an LLC, or is a Sole Proprietorship sufficient if you income is on a Form 1099?
