Joe Welinske Presents: How to Position UA within UX
It's a New Year, a New You, so why not also New UA and New UX? (See what we did there?)
To kick off the new year with a bang, OCSTC is flying in tech-comm celebrity and User Assistance Guru Joe Welinske to present on...you guessed it....User Assistance and User Experience. While you would usually need to shell out hundreds of dollars to see Joe at a conference, you get to see him for the low-low cost of an OCSTC meeting registration ($12 to $31). So come prepared with all of your UA and UX questions, because you'll get to pick the brain of the one and only Joe Welinske!
User assistance (UA) continues to be an important element in software development. However, many of the activities traditionally performed by a person with a technical communication background are increasingly being absorbed into User Experience. In some respects, this is limited to a rebranding of skills to match evolving design philosophies. In other respects, design philosophies have evolved an expectation of very different skill sets to accomplish UA.
This session provides a brief overview of the world of User Experience, describes the areas where user assistance plays an important role, and offers a discussion of what that means for today’s UA professionals as we move forward.

He also teaches courses for Bellevue College, the University of California, and the University of Washington.
Free LinkedIn Headshots
OCSTC is offering FREE LINKEDIN HEADSHOTS! That's right folks, we are bringing in a professional photographer (with his handy-dandy pro camera and backdrop) to take professional photos of each attendee. The photographer will take photos from 6pm to 6:45pm at the Jan 15th meeting, so be sure to get there on time! As part of the package, the photographer will do some light editing on the photos and send them later via DropBox.

Oh, and did we mention that this service is FREE?! (aka included in your registration for the Jan 15 meeting).

There is another DoubleTree hotel nearby, so it’s easy to accidentally go to the wrong location if you do a search for “DoubleTree” on your phone, instead of searching for the exact address!
The DoubleTree Club offers complimentary valet parking. If you prefer to self-park, tell the valet that you’re at the hotel for an OCSTC meeting, and ask if you can park yourself.
